⑨FUJITA Kyohei, Ornamental box, “Cherry Blossoms at Night”

This ornamental box is considered one of Fujita Kyohei’s defining works. Fascinated by the Rinpa school of painting from his teenage years, he sought to recreate its style in glass. In 1973, he exhibited Ornamental box, “Iris” (now in the collection of the National Crafts Museum). Ornamental box, “Cherry Blossoms at Night” was made considerably later, in 1996, reflecting Fujita’s decades-long exploration of the ornamental box format.
　In one anecdote, when an audience member at a lecture asked Fujita, “What should be placed in this box?” he responded, “Put your dreams in it.” What would you keep in this box if it were yours?
