⑱NAKAGAWA Mamoru Inlaid ornament, gold and silver, “Kingfisher” 2017
Nakagawa often chooses landscapes as his subject matter, but occasionally creates ornaments and incense burners with animal motifs. Nakagawa points out that one of the attractions of metalwork is the way the metal's appearance changes with the reflection of light. The brilliant blue color of a kingfisher's feathers is achieved by the reflection of light, and metal and kingfishers, two things that at first glance seem unrelated, are linked together by the common thread of light reflection. This makes us realize that metalwork is a field backed by a scientific perspective.
The Shosoin patterns inlaid on the feathers are also a highlight, bringing out the kingfisher's dignified appearance.
