④OKI Junko scarlet 2023

Receiving a strong sense of presence from the threads on the right part of the work, Oki named it scarlet. The artist uses a variety of other threads, but she says that she followed her intuition during production instead of making calculated selections. She often reflects the will of the threads and fabrics in her works by intuitively capturing them, rather than her own will. In this work, a string hangs down, and this, too, seemed to her like it saying, “I want to hang here.”
The string is an important element in Oki’s art. In her home, many strings are waiting for their turns in a box labeled “Strings” so that they can participate in her works at any time. They are like blood vessels or nerves and may be there to help the work connect to the outside world after embroidering is finished, says Oki.
