⑦NAKATA Mayu Before the Storm 2024
The view from above is of deep green and a ring of light that surrounds it. The patterns polished on the surface shimmer like a mirage, obscuring the real image. Nakata says that when she saw the sky covered with thick clouds brighten with lightning, she sensed the moment when the invisible is revealed, and thus expressed it in this work. Whi le the ar t ist expresses the excitement she feels when something that always exists is brought to the surface by an opportunity, she also says that she wants to make it unrecognizable at a glance. Her conflicting feelings are naturally connected to the process of applying dozens of layers of lacquer and that of polishing out the patterns. In this work, kimma techniques correspond to the context in which the artist’s inner self is expressed.
