③OKI Junko a peach 2020

Impressive in its light colors and the texture of the materials, this work expresses a commonplace mindscape from the artist’s childhood, when her mother peeled a peach for her after a meal. The Japanese title of this work is sui-mitsu-to (lit. water-nectar-peach) instead of the more common momo. She recalls how her grandmother and mother used to refer to peaches as suimitsu- to and felt that she was able to recreate the sensory aspect of the word in this work. In terms of technique, the silk threads are stitched according to the flow of feeling, the opposite of technicalism. The support cloth for this work, which makes a strong impression with its richly shaded pink threads, already had stains spreading on it when the artist acquired it. Oki recalls that the stains looked like the cloth had been discolored by spilled juice, so there may have been an unconscious commitment to name it sui-mitsu-to.
