⑨MATSUNAGA Keita Monuke 2024

This is one of Matsunaga’s recent works using transfers. While the abstract geomet ric pat terns seem as though representing the world of the near future, they were created by attaching photographs to a decal and then baking it into patterns. The photographs used in the series illustrate objects and places associated with the artist’s roots. For this work, he uses those of the tin walls of his own studio and the rubble disposal site.
The walls of the studio, where the work is “born,” and the rubble disposal area, where damaged pottery, or the “end” of the work, is collected, are captured in the photographs. He employs decalcomania and slip casting because he works in Toki City where 40% of Japan’s tableware is produced. Although Matsunaga’s works tend to draw attention to their form, his roots occupy a large position for understanding his art.
