Okazaki Castle Outer Moat Enclosure
Okazaki Castle and the castle town were encompassed by sogamae, enclosures within the outer moats and defensive earthworks, measuring around 1.5km east-west and about 1.0km north-south, making it one of the largest castles in Japan. The Tokaido Highway ran through the castle grounds. Because this section of the Tokaido featured many corners, it was known as Niju-nana-magari, or 27 turns, and the castle town developed along the route.
