The Hatcho Miso Brewery and the Townscape

Two long-established companies that have been in business since the Edo period (17th to 19th centuries) and still make Hatcho Miso, face each other across Hatcho Okan-dori󠄀 street.

Both companies maintain traditional buildings and the atmosphere of the days when people traveled the old Tokaido. This historical miso brewery townscape extends around 180 meters along the intersecting Hacho kura-dori street.

The miso brewery features a large two-story warehouse built raised on granite stone walls to protect it from possible flooding of the nearby Yahagi River. The lower section of the warehouse wall is protected by black wood paneling, while the upper section, covered with smooth white plaster, features latticed windows which can be opened for temperature and humidity control. Enjoy the atmosphere, the white walls of nearby historical temples and the striking contrast of the black and white warehouse exteriors, together with the faint scent of Miso on the streets around this traditional local industry.
