Satsuma Tubeworm

They Live on the Volcanic Gases Released Into Kinko Bay!

Tubeworms, closely related to earthworms and lugworms, live in a tube that is made from material excreted from their own bodies. They were discovered in Kinko Bay and thus given their name*. They have no mouth or stomach, but create nutrients inside their bodies from the gas that is released from volcanic vents, called tagiri, that can be found throughout Kinko Bay. They are unique creatures with many mysteries. At Kagoshima Aquarium, various research studies are being conducted on these creatures. *Satsuma is the historic name of Kagoshima.
