Sakai Area

The Mozu Kofun Group, registered as a World Heritage site in 2019, contain numerous ancient tumuli, including the world’s largest tumulus, that of Emperor Nintoku.

With numerous ancient temples, home to the tea ceremony culture perfected by Sen-no-Rikyu, and with traditional industries like blade-making and bicycle manufacture, the area is steeped in history and culture.

Tumulus of Emperor Nintoku

Along with the Great Pyramid of Khufu and Qin Shi Huang’s tomb, it is considered one of the three largest tombs in the world. Estimated to have been built in the mid-5th century, it is Japan’s largest keyhole-shaped tomb mound.

Sakai Plaza of Rikyu and Akiko

Sen-no-Rikyu perfected the tea ceremony, and Yosano Akiko was a female poet who helped form modern Japanese culture.

This facility offers the chance to learn about and experience the history and culture of Sakai while immersed in the life and works of two of its greatest children.
