Waraji (straw sandals)

Waraji are sandals made of rice straw that were worn by the brewers.

The strict hierarchical relationships of the times can be seen in the form of the waraji and where they were left.
The lowest position was of meshitaki (brewery cook, cleaner) and the second lowest for kamaya (steaming master). The higher the placement, the thicker and wider the waraji straw sandals become. The highest place was unquestionably for the toji, the brewmaster. The toji and his assistant, the kashira, had large sandals, the quality of which stood apart from the others.
