Introduction to the Museum

The building that houses the Sake Brewery Museum was built at the beginning of the Taisho Period, and functioned as Hakutsuru’s No.1 Storehouse until 1969.

Reborn as the Hakutsuru Sake Brewery Museum in 1982, this museum exhibits actual tools used in the making of sake, and much more.

The traditional wooden sake brewery construction is known as a kasanegura (stacked brewery). This is the basic structure of sake breweries in Nada.

There are two buildings on the north side and the south side, stretching east to west, characteristic of this style of brewery construction. On the north side is the okura (large storehouse) which was used for the preparation and storage of sake, and on the south side is the maekura (front storehouse).

In winter, cold winds called the Rokko-oroshi blew down from the mountains to hit the okura from the north side, providing low temperatures ideal for sake brewing that could be regulated through the opening and closing of windows.

In summer, the maekura to the south functioned as a shield against the sunlight, helping to maintain the quality of the sake stored in the okura.
