TAKAHASHI YOSHIHIKO playtime
TAKAHASHI YOSHIHIKO playtime

Takahashi Yoshihiko (b. 1958) studied glass-working at Tama Art University. While still at university, he took part in the World Crafts Council in Kyoto, as a result of which he decided to become a glass artist. Inspired by the overseas artists at the Council who were breaking new ground in free expression using glass, he went on to incorporate various techniques into his practice to bring out glass’s diverse characteristics.
In particular, his hot-worked pieces crafted from melted glass make the most of the viscosity and movement of the glass he senses while making them. Their gentle forms and smooth surfaces are shaped with economical movements while controlling the fundamental forces brought to bear on the material, such as the weight and centrifugal force of melted glass. Working on the glass in an almost playful manner while engaging in a dialogue with its responses, Takahashi creates works that have a somehow mysterious appearance and arouse curiosity as to their texture.
This exhibition provides an introduction to Takahashi’s practice in recent years and features a number of works newly created for the occasion. From pieces such as enigma, in which different parts are combined like a collage, and The things I left behind, which arose from confronting living itself, viewers will get a sense of the appeal of the artist’s work.
