The Painter and Sakurajima
An artist fascinated by Sakurajima is walking with his apprentice to make a sketch there.
For artists, Kagoshima's appeal is in its natural wilderness.
Many art pieces inspired by Sakurajima and Amami Oshima's abundant nature still exist.
Kagoshima-born Kuroda Seiki, known as the top Western-style artist of Japan, also drew Sakurajima.
It all started when he was visiting home.
In 1914, Sakurajima had a huge eruption.
Seeing this, Kuroda Seiki wanted to express the volcano's energy in a drawing, so he headed to the port.
It took 6 paintings to express the entirety of the burning mountain's changing expressions.
These paintings can now be seen at the Kagoshima City Museum of Art, where they are collected.
Because of this eruption, lava flowed towards the east, connecting the island to the mainland.
The historic eruption of Sakurajima fascinated Kuroda.
It changed the landscape, and the story is still passed down to tell us of nature's marvels.
