Rouka-bashi (Corridor Bridge)

The Rouka-bashi was a corridor bridge connecting the Jibutsudo Bailey directly to the base of the castle keep, the last bastion in times of attack. Because this arrangement of a bailey being linked by bridge to the keep is rare, opinions are divided, but it is believed that the bridge was built for either troop dispatch or to aid escape from the castle. The current stone bridge was rebuilt in 1920. A giant stone, called a kagami-ishi and symbolizing authority, is set in the castle keep’s stone base in front of the bridge.
