Located east of the Ni-no-maru (second baiey), the Higashi Kuruwa, also known as the Higashi-maru, features the Higashi-sumi-yagura (East corner watchtower) on the south eastern corner. This watchtower was responsible for monitoring and defending the route between the Sugou Kuruwa (Sugou bailey) and the Ni-no-maru. Attackers could be repelled with heavy fire from the flank. The Higashi-sumi-yagura was reconstructed in 2010.
