World Heritage Toshodaiji Temple
Category: Temple

The Shingon Risshū sect was established by the great monk, Abbot Ganjin (Jianzhen) who accomplished coming to Japan after going through many hardships. He built it as a temple for learning the precepts of Buddhism. There are excellent temple treasures and cultural properties still remaining such as seated statues of the buddha Rushana (Vairocana) and Abbot Ganjin. Furthermore, buildings from the time of its establishment also remain, such as the Kondō (Golden Hall or main hall) and the Kōdō Lecture Hall, built by moving and remodeling Heijō Palace's Higashi Chōshūden (government workers’ building).
