Higashimuki Shopping Street

The name Higashimuki originates from the time when the temple complex of Kohfukuji Temple was on the east side of Higashi-rokubo-oji Street, between Nijo-oji Street and Sanjo-oji Street. For this reason, building houses in the area was unacceptable for a long time. In the 16th century, dwellings were built on the west side only, facing east, and the name “Higashimuki,” or literally “east-facing” came to be. Ages past, the power of Kohfukuji Temple dwindled, and houses were built on the east side as well, which is why the center line of the street is farther west when compared to that of the former Rokubo-oji Street south of Sanjo. Tenkawa Benzaiten of Yoshino County came to be worshipped in the Genroku Period, and the Benten Festival every July adds bustle to this very day. On the former grounds of Kohfukuji Temple on the east side of the shopping street stands the Nara Episcopal Church of the Anglican Church in Japan, a wooden structure which was built in 1930 by expert carpenters specializing in restoring old shrines and temples, and it is designated as an Important Cultural Property. While adjacent to Kintetsu Nara Station, this town has both the charm of an educational district with a cultural hall, Nara Women’s University, and a catholic kindergarten, and the feel of a long-standing residential area. The shopping street has a unique atmosphere with very original and energetic young shop tenants, whose shops are popular with female university students, mixed in with long-established stores such as a book store and a Japanese sweets store with their own classic styles to feel. It is also the entrance to the “Kita-machi” area which has been attracting attention recently.
