Nara City Central Shopping District’s Shopping Streets

The traditional commercial area of Nara which still bustles today is located within the jobo (grid plan area) city of old Heijō-kyo, in the area projecting eastward called “gekyo,” (literally outside the capital) running from Ichijo to Gojo, and Higashi-shibo to Higashi-shichibo. The north-south axis is Higashi-nanabo-oji Street, and the east-west axis is Sanjo-oji Street.

Once, “Kohfukuji Temple” had a large extending precinct between Nijo-oji Street and Sanjo-oji Street, on the east side of Higashi-nanabo-oji Street between Higashi-shichibo-oji Street. Until the decline of their power as a result of the Meiji Restoration, “Kohfukuji Temple” as well as Kasuga-no-sha Shrine (the former name of Kasuga Taisha Shrine prior to the Meiji Restoration) had the influence to govern Yamato. Across Sarusawa-ike Pond and farther to the south, is “Gankoji Temple,” its origin said to be rooted in Hōkōji Temple of Asuka. While it kept a large precinct as well, its influence declined, and in the Edo Period machiya (traditional townhouses) were built on the site that now constitutes “Naramachi.”

The existence of temples and the jobo-style city structure from the presence of Heijō-kyo, as well as “Todaiji Temple” and “Kasugataisha Shrine” located farther east of the gekyo area have also influenced the names of the shopping streets. And to this day, the prosperity of these shopping streets supports the festivals of these temples and shrines.

In this map, we will introduce 8 shopping street organizations, as well as information about stores in the areas of “Kami-sanjo / Tsunofuri” and “Tsubai” that take part in the exhibition of the Shosoin Treasures.
