What is Residential Tax?
Residential Tax【Municipal・Prefectural Tax】is imposed on each resident that includes foreign residents in Japan that should be paid to each municipality.
This obligation is imposed on all who leave Japan after January 2nd each year

Municipal Tax・Prefectural Tax Declaration Guidance
Basically, every resident has an obligation to make Municipal Tax・Prefectural Tax declaration. However, people whose employer reports each employee’s salary payment to Municipal Office, and people who files for Final Income Tax Return are not included.
Declaration can be made by sending documents by post or at counter※ . Please refer to the following video for further information on necessary documents and form filling out procedure.
※Municipal Office each branch office will accept declaration during designated declaration period, which is from mid-February to mid-March.
As for the rest, please come to Municipal Tax Division counter, 4th floor Municipal Office Main Building.

Do not forget to include a copy of your photo-attached personal ID, such as Residence Card, etc.

For the renewal procedure of your permitted period of stay
Renewal procedure for your visa may requires you to submit Residential Tax Taxation / Tax-exempted Certificate.
The amount of imposed Residential Tax, the amount of annual income are stated on this Taxation / Tax exempted Certificate.
The submission of Tax-paid Certificate may be required.
Not only Residential Tax, but there are other taxes you have to pay to the municipality.
Aside from Residential Tax, there are other taxes you need to pay.
