How the National Pension System works
Enrollment in National Pension scheme is an obligation of all residents in Japan.
National Pension scheme is a mutual aid system which supports your life in retirement, life after you have got physically disabled, and life after you have lost the breadwinner of your family.

The Law provides that every resident in Japan aged between 20 and 59 has an obligation to enroll in "National Pension" scheme.
Every resident in Japan of that age category includes foreign residents, regardless of nationality. Premium payment is a prerequisite to receive pension in the future. In other word, "if you do not pay premiums", then "you will not be able to become a pensioner"
