Enazuka (Placenta Mound)

 The future Shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu was born on the 26th day of the 12th month of 1542(by the old Japanese calendar) in Okazaki Castle. This Enazuka or placenta mound was built in 1936 to promote the achievements of Tokugawa Ieyasu. The placenta discharged during childbirth was placed in a vessel and buried to ensure a child's growth and success. Often monuments were erected on these placental mounds, becoming places of veneration.
