Honmaru Uzumi Gate Stone Wall

One of the four gates leading into the Honmaru (main bailey), the Uzumi Gate was heavily fortified and set deep in the surrounding stone walls.

Notches on both sides of the stone walls indicate where the gate’ s support beams once sat. Marks like this, 卍 and # are carved into the stone face*.

* The reverse swastika is an auspicious Buddhist symbol.
