Furotani Kuruwa (Furotani Bailey)
Located to the south of the Honmaru (main bailey), this narrow bailey leads to the Furotani Gate, one of the three gates leading to the Honmaru. Any attackers attempting to enter the Furotani Gate could be fired upon from the yagura watchtowers and yokoya flank defense ports to the south of the Honmaru. The narrow flight of stairs is positioned so as to make it difficult to attack, yet easy to defend, allowing counter attacks from the left and rear of the enemy, making it an effective and efficient line of defense.
