KADA
Kada is on the northwestern point of Wakayama Prefecture, near the border with Osaka Prefecture. The town is a historic one, appearing in the ancient chronicles and myths of Japan. Used as a hub of water transport for over a thousand years, and where the famous Nara-period mystic En-no-Gyoja trained, during the Edo period Kada flourished as a port town on the route lords would take to the shogun’s capital of Edo. The streetscapes and historical sites here tell stories of the past, allowing us today to glimpse their long-ago prosperity.
Known for its scenic beauty too, featuring in the famous classic of ancient poetry, Collection of a Myriad Leaves. The islands of Tomogashima, Awajishima, and in the distance, Shikoku, can be seen from this beautiful shore across the Kitan Strait. The view of the evening sun sinking into the sea is particularly famous. Walking these streets, where old sites and buildings still remain, such as the Awashima Shrine, a popular worship site for women and famed for its Doll Floating Festival, may conjure up feelings of nostalgia, relaxing your soul and spirit. Pole-fished wild sea bream and other fresh-caught seafood are especially tasty here.
