Mt. Koya was first settled some 1200 years ago by Kukai, also known as Kobo Daishi. Mt. Koya is known for the Kongobuji, the head temple of the Shingon School, as well as the Konpon Daito pagoda that is a symbol of the area, as well as the pilgrimage route to the Inner Shrine lined with grave markers for famous historical figures like Oda Nobunaga and members of the Toyotomi and Tokugawa clans. And don’t forget to try the famous local delicacies like sesame tofu or traditional Buddhist cuisine! Your visit will be enlivened by the colorful flowers throughout the seasons. We also recommend going a little bit further on, and visiting the shrine of Kojin (Tateri Kojin), known as the “shrine above the clouds.”
