Yakushiji Temple - Genjō Sanzō-in (Temple dedicated to Genjō Sanzō)
Category: Temple
Genjō Sanzō (Xuanzang Sanzang) (602-664) was a real Buddhist monk, who was the model for the character Tang Sanzang in the tale, Journey to the West. The teachings that Genjō considered to be the most important from the sutras he brought back with him from India were carried and compiled as the Hossō sect of Buddhism by his disciple, Jion Daishi. As Genjō was the founder of the Hossō sect, the Genjō-Sanzō-in was founded, and it enshrines the parietal bones (upper part of the skull) of Genjō in the pagoda. The Hall of the Wall Painting of the Great Tang of the Western Regions houses a 49-meter-long mural of Genjō’s journey, painted by the master artist Ikuo Hirayama.
