World Heritage Gangoji Temple

A temple of the Shingon Risshū sect. Gangoji temple is a reconstruction of the oldest temple of Japan, Hōkō-ji (Asuka-dera) founded by Soga-no Umako. It was rebuilt after it was moved from its original location to the capital of Heijō-kyō. It prospered as a Buddhist invocation seminary from the 12th century, primarily for monks called gokuraku-bō, and drew the faith of the public. In addition to the Chikō Mandala (National Heritage), a lot of documents indicating faith among the common people remain. The neighborhood of the temple is called Naramachi.
