Todaiji Temple - Shōrō (bell-tower)

The bell-tower (Shoro) which holds the grand bell was reconstructed in 1210. Todaiji Temple’s bell (National Treasure) is from the time when Todaiji Temple was established. It stands at a total height of 3.86 meters, with a diameter of 2.71 meters, and weighs 26.3 tons. The bell hammer is made of zelkova wood and it is 4.48 meters in length, 30 centimeters in diameter and 180 kilograms in weight, or roughly 200 kilograms including its metal parts. It is counted as one of the three legendary bells of Japan.
