World Heritage Todaiji Temple
Category: Temple
This is the Head temple of Kegon sect. It was called "Kinkōmyō Shitenno Gokoku-no-tera" in old times and was built by Emperor Shomu who wished to safeguard the country under Buddha's protection. In 752, a ceremony to consecrate the newly-constructed Great Buddha was held, but from the medieval ages, twice were many Buddhist structures destroyed by the flames of war, including the Great Buddha Hall. Each time it happened, national recovery efforts rebuilt them.
