Washi-no-Sato Road

See, learn about, and experience firsthand the history, culture, and techniques of washi paper on this "Main Street of Paper."

Washi-no-Sato Road is Echizen Washi Village's Main Street for visitors. At the Papyrus House Washi Workshop, Studio, and Shop, anyone can try making their own paper quickly and easily. At the Udatsu Museum and Workshop, visitors can see experts making washi paper the old-fashioned way from up close. Finally, the Museum of Washi and Culture teaches visitors all about the history and techniques of Echizen Washi. This 200-meter road also features a number of shops and restaurants, where visitors can relax or find Echizen Washi souvenirs to take home.

If you continue to walk for about 15 minutes past the Museum of Washi and Culture, you'll come across Okamoto and Otaki Shrines, dedicated to Japan's one and only goddess of paper. Even the walk to the shrines is charming, with a path that travels through the village's old-fashioned townscape.
