⑫The Katsura Trees
Rock supported by a katsura tree (Ishigedo Rest Area)
Katsura (Cercidiphyllum japonicum) is one of the characteristic trees of the Towada area together with beech and Japanese horse chestnut.
In the spring its buds are red; its heart-shaped leaves are green in the summer and yellow in the fall.
Katsura tend to sucker (to send up shoots from the base of the trunk), and often grow many stout trunks in a clump. In the fall their scattered leaves give off a sweet smell.
