⑨The Flowers of Early Summer
Kurumabasō (Galium odoratum)
In late June and early July, the forest floor and roadsides are carpeted with white flowers.
The most noticeable of these is the onishimotsuke (Filipendula camtschatica), a type of meadowsweet that bears a cluster of tiny white flowers on an upright stalk.
The miyamakaramatsu (Thalictrum filamentosum var. tenurum) is a meadow-rue that bears ball-like inflorescences with fine petals like the needles of a larch.
The kurumabasō (literally, wheel-leaf grass), or sweet woodruff (Galium odoratum), was named in Japanese for the way in which its leaves are arranged around its stems like the spokes of wheel.
The zudayakushu (Tiarella polyphylla) was named in Japanese for its use as an antiathsmatic herb.
