⑦Summer Bird Watching

Narcissus flycatcher (Ficedula narcissina)

Migratory birds that arrive in the spring from the south, breed in Japan, and fly back in the fall are called “summer birds.”

The most numerous of these is the narcissus flycatcher (Ficedula narcissina), which can be seen energetically flitting from branch to branch as it catches bugs.

Summer visitors can also listen to the chirruping of the blue-and-white flycatchers (Cyanoptila cyanomelana) in the treetops, and the piercing “hee-tsoo-kee hee-tsoo-kee” of the Sakhalin leaf warblers (Phylloscopus borealoides) in the thickets.

The ruddy kingfisher (Halcyon coromanda) has bright red plumage reminiscent of tropical birds, but is a rare bird seldom seen.
