⑥Ferns
Thick-stemmed wood fern (Dryopteris crassirhizoma)
Most ferns like damp and shade, and in some places they form large communities. The dense forest that presses over the Oirase River is a perfect environment for ferns, which, together with mosses, are characteristic of the Oirase Gorge.
Beside the road are popular ferns like the thick-stemmed wood fern (Dryopteris crassirhizoma), the trifid holly fern (Polystichum tripteron), the upside-down fern (Arachniodes standishii), and sakage-inode (Polystichum retroso-paleaceum).
Trifid holly ferns can be distinguished by the lowermost leaflets (pinnae) of their fronds, which are noticeably larger and are more protruding than the leaflets beside them.
Upside-down ferns can be distinguished by the lower surfaces of their fronds, which are almost the same shape and color as the upper surfaces.
