⑤Japanese poplar
Japanese Poplars (Populus suaveolens)
Among the towering trees on the islets of the gorge are those with deeply fissured bark. These are the doronoki, or Japanese poplars (Populus suaveolens). Many of them grow to be very sturdy, and their cotton-wrapped seeds can be seen floating through the air of the valley like snowflakes in August and September.
