②Spring and Summer Cicadas
Ezoharuzemi (Terpnosia nigricosta)
From mid-May, when the bright tree-buds begin to appear, until the end of June, the ezoharuzemi (Terpnosia nigricosta) can be heard singing noisily throughout the gorge. The song can be mistaken for birdsong and begins to be replaced in early July by the songs of summer cicadas such as ezozemi (Lyristes japonicus), akaezozemi (Lyristes flammatus) and koezozemi (Lyristes bihamatus). Of the summer cicadas, the loud akaezozemi (Lyristes flammatus) is perhaps the most striking.
