①Boulder Vegetation
Albrecht's azalea (Rhododendron albrechtii)
No major tributaries flow into the Oirase River upstream of the Oirase Gorge, so nearly all the water is from Lake Towada. The river rarely swells even with the heaviest of rains, allowing plants to grow on the rocks in the stream undisturbed. The sight of plants growing on river rocks is unique to Oirase. Visitors can view torch azalea (Rhododendron kaempferi), Albrecht’s azalea (Rhododendron albrechtii), hotsutsuji (Elliottia paniculata), Japanese ash (Fraxinus lanuginosa f. serrata), komine maple (Acer micranthum), and taniutsugi (Weigela hortensis).
