Suzuki Kyosen Bad is Bad (Hihi) 2015 Collection of Artist

There is Suzuki Kyosen of Chobun Shokai〔Founded by Matsui Joryu in 1928. The Chobun Shoten was held in tandem with the Tokyo Shodokai, and in 2017 they amalgamated. The group aims to create calligraphy based in tradition but with a contemporary sensibility.〕. Suzuki studied under Matsui Joryu〔1900-1988. Studied under Yoshida Hoshiku. A pioneer in small number of characters calligraphy in both the Mainichi Shodoten and the Nitten. Yoshida and Nishikawa Yasushi published the magazine Shohin, transforming contemporary calligraphy studies. Also renowned as a waka poet. 〕, and has consistently worked in large character format calligraphy. He is known for his distinctive group of works characterized by their pale ink and fine lines. While his adroit use of pale ink reveals the beauty of ink tones, the diversity of lines that Suzuki is constantly investigating continues to expand the potential of brushes as artistic tools. For example Bad is Bad (Hihi) (cat. no. 47) repeats the same character twice. And while it is a character made up of extremely simple vertical and horizontal strokes, in Suzuki's work, there is no repetition seen in his rendering of these vertical and horizontal strokes. The thickness and thinness of lines, the layering of ink and its blurring, its puddling, all draw the viewer's eye and all reveal his fluency in different line expressions. Then when we look at the entire sheet of paper, we notice the harmony created by blank space and lines, the beauty of the white paper and the spatial effect created across the whole sheet.
