Akiyama Kazuya From the Sanjurokkasensho Anthology(detail) 2018 Collection of Artist

The next section focusing on kana calligraphy introduces Akiyama Kazuya of the Kenshin Shodokai 〔Founded in 1933 by NIshikawa Yasushi and others. The first exhibition of the group was held that year at the Tokyo Prefectural Art Museum. Today there are three divisions, kanji, kana and seal carving. The group favors the classics, and emphasizes calligraphy study based on learning from the classics〕. Akiyama trained under Kuwata Sanshu and is affiliated with the Kobe Sasanamikai. Active in the Kenshinten, Yomiuri Shohoten, and Nitten exhibitions, Akiyama's works are characterized by their bold compositions of scattered kana. Like other kana calligraphy artists, Akiyama strongly believes in copying classic models, continuing to copy from model texts everyday even when immersed in his creative work. This exhibition features two major examples of his folded volume works that were created in the full maturity of both spirit and body, works that reflect his diligent absorption of the essence of ancient calligraphies. In addition to these artworks reflecting the aesthetics of the classics, this exhibition also features his contemporary works, including large kana brushed on full-size, elegantly decorated kaishi paper.
