Konishi-sakura-dori Shopping Street
Konishi-dori Street (Rokubo-bokan-higashi-koji Street) is one street west of Higashi-muki-dori Street (Higashi-rokubo-oji Street). There is a theory that the reason for the name "Konishi" (little west) is from it being "a little west of Kohfukuji Temple." At the northernmost part of the “Nakakaido Road” which currently spans modern Yamato's north and south, heading south passing Tsunofuri and Jodo, then in Kyobate turning west, past Daianji Temple and from Yamato-koriyama, it is said to have been connected to “Shimotsu-michi Road.” Acting as a substitute for Tsutsui Junkei’s late father, Mokuami, the blind Buddhist priest inspired the phrase "moto-no-mokuami," or "to be right back where you started," and it is said he lived on the southernmost part of Konishi-dori Street, in Tsunofuri-cho. With the underground installation of Kintetsu Nara Station in 1970, the Konishi Sakura-dori Shopping Street became a conveniently located place directly connected to the station. It consists of a street running north to south from the station to Sanjo-dori Street for 200 meters, and of a 100 meter-long street running east to west which connects to the Akazunomon (the never-opened gate) Gate of Kohfukuji Temple at the east-facing end. Over 120 stores including tenancies line the two streets. From supermarkets and large-scale retailers to the secret-spot stores characteristic of Konishi in the backs of alleys or on the upper floors of buildings, there are various charms. In July, the area is beautifully adorned with colorful Tanabata (Star Festival) decorations, and adornments for seasonal events such as Tokae (Candle Festival) and Omizutori (Water-Drawing Ceremony) are also displayed in accordance with the event.
