Rules for protecting the deer

Deer have been living in Nara Park in great numbers for over a thousand years.

We ask for your cooperation in protecting their well-being.

Please do not unleash or abandon dogs in the park.

Attention
Note: The only exception are shika senbei (deer crackers). They are made especially for the deer.


No littering.
The deer might eat the trash and get sick.


Do not hit or chase the deer.

Caution to deers

●The Deer of Nara is designated as Natural Monument of Japan

●Feed deer with crackers only. Other food is health hazardous to the deer.

●"The Deer of Nara" are accustomed to people, but they are definitely wild animals. Beware the deer attacks (especially for small children).
※Stay away from female deer during reproductive season particularly May and June, and male deer in mating season particulary from July to November. They tend to have violent tempers.
※Do not touch baby deer. Mother deer might attack.

●After you purchase deer crackers, please feed them right away, or they might run after you. If you tease deer with the crackers, they may get furious and attack. Once all deer crackers are gone, open your hands to the eye level of deer to show there is nothing left.

●The paper tie of deer crackers is 100% made of pulp with soy ink. Those are non-toxic to deer and you can feed them with the crackers.

●There has been no reports of rabies or any other infectious diseases from deer attacks or bites for over the past 50 years in Japan making it a rabies-free country.
