Haneda Nihonbashi

pic02.jpg

Nihonbashi is a bridge built in 1603 by Ieyasu Tokugawa, the first shogun of the Edo Bakufu. Nihonbashi was the starting point of major roads that led to areas all around the country and many stores were located in this area. Nihonbashi was bustling with people as "the starting point of a trip."

Haneda Airport serves as "the starting point of a trip" for present-day Edo (Tokyo) and so a "Haneda Nihonbashi" was built. The bridge is a reproduction of Nihonbashi from the early 19th century and constructed entirely of Japanese cypress. It spans 25m, making it a recreation that is approximately half its original size at the time.

Nihonbashi continues to watch over travelers from more than 400 years ago. "Haneda Nihonbash" is a "bridge for trips" that inherits this history.
