4. Gofuku-ya Fabric Store
There were many gofuku-ya fabric stores in Osaka during the Edo era, selling tanmono fabric (or gofuku) for kimono.
Across the doma earthen floor in the middle, the store is divided into the kami-mise upper store on the right, and the shimo-mise lower store on the left.
In the upper store, silk tanmono fabrics were sold while in the lower store, furute second-hand clothes were sold.
During the Edo era when people took good care of their clothes, even second-hand clothes and fabric scraps were precious tradable goods.
The treasure ship tsukurimono ceremonial prop displayed in the upper store is aptly made of luxurious decorative broad sashes for kimono.
In order to prevent color-fading of valuable goods caused by direct sunlight, gofuku-ya fabric stores at that time hung naga-noren long curtains from the eaves.
The stool extruding from the storefront, which is used as a display shelf for goods, can be folded up and locked after store hours. When morning comes, it is slammed opened and is, thus, called battari-shōgi, which is a Japanese onomatopoeia.
