Time travel back to Edo Period

Functioning as the logistical hub of the whole country, Osaka during the Edo era prospered as Japan’s largest commercial city.

The exhibit here is a life-size replica of Osaka’s machiya shophouses and surrounding cityscape during the early Tenpō years (c. A.D. 1830) in the latter half of Edo era, which was reconstructed by using the traditional construction method at that time.

After the first crow of rooster at dawn kicks off the day, the city bustles during the day with lively trading, and the day ends with sunset glow, which is followed by the moon rising in the evening sky as the night advances.

Please experience the transition of the day in 45 minutes in a fast-forward mode.

Neighborhood Entrance Gate

This kidomon gate at the neighborhood entrance was built on the border between neighborhoods.

A wooden sign board indicating the name of this neighborhood Osaka-machi san(3)-chōme is placed on the gate.
For the security and the maintenance of public order, the gate was closed at night.
