Wakayama Castle

Listed in the top 100 castles of Japan as the residence of the three privileged branches of the Tokugawa family who established the House of Kishu with a yield of 555,000 koku of rice, the castle continues to be a symbolic landmark in Wakayama City. The castle tower provides panoramic views over the surrounding town in all directions, and it also allows visitors to sense the history inherent with the Momijidani Garden, which is famous for its beautiful autumn colors, the Ohashiroka Bridge, and other spots.

Yosuien Gardens

Gardens surrounding a pond using sea water, representative of samurai-style gardens, that was built by Harutomi Tokugawa, the leader of the Kishu Clan, in the 1820s. It has many sights worth seeing, such as the Sukiya-built Yosui-tei (tea house) and its tea room.

Banndoko-Garden

A lawn garden located on a headland extending into Wakaura Bay. The Kishu Clan established a lookout post on this headland during the Edo Period, so it is known as the “Nose of Banndoko (lookout post)”. It provides spectacular views of Oshima (male island), Nakanoshima (female island) and Futagojima, and it is famous for its sunset panoramas.
