HISTORY
This building was built in commemoration of the Emperor Showa's acension to the throne. In 1931, citizens donated 1.5 million yen (a lot at that time!) to restore Osaka Castle, establish Osaka Castle Park, and construct this building as the headquarters of the Japanese Army 4th Division.
This grandiose-looking structure was inspired by European castles from the Middle Ages, and is distinguished by castle-like decorations along the roofline and turrets along the front and at the corners.
Following the Second World War, it became the headquarters of the Osaka Municipal Police and, after that, the Osaka Prefectural Police. It was then internally remodeled and from 1960 to 2001 was the Osaka Municipal Museum.
