Okayama, Yamaguchi, Tottori, Shimane, Kagawa and Ehime Tourist Guide

[Okayama, Cyugoku]

Okayama Castle, also known as "crow castle" due to its black exterior, was built in 1597 in the style of the Azuchi-Momoyama Period. The original castle was destroyed in the last year of World War 2, but a reconstruction was made in 1966. The castle is located on the Asahi River, which was used as a moat. Korakuen Garden is located just across the river.

The main building of Okayama Castle is the six story castle keep. The keep's interior is modern and displays exhibits on the history and development of the castle. Only one of Okayama Castle's original buildings escaped destruction, the Tsukimi Yagura ("moon viewing turret"), which dates back to 1620. There are also reconstructions and unearthed foundations of former buildings, which help illustrate the former extent of the castle's complex of buildings.

●Okayama Castle

photo001_Okayama_Castle_.jpg

The Kintai-kyo Bridge has been Iwakuni's most distinguished landmark and a subject of admiration for hundreds of years. Completely made of wood and without the use of any nails, the bridge makes five bold arches onto massive stone pillars as it crosses over the Nishiki River.

Plans for the Kintai-kyo were first drawn up when strong currents had once again destroyed a bridge crossing the Nishiki River. A more durable bridge was commissioned by Kikkawa Hiroyoshi, the third feudal lord of Iwakuni, whose statue stands at the entrance to Kikko Park. After the bridge was completed in 1673, it kept standing until 1950, when Iwakuni was struck by a violent typhoon.

●Korakuen Garden

photo002_Korakuen_.jpg

Korakuen is a beautiful landscape garden and Okayama's main attraction. Along with Kanazawa's Kenrokuen and Mito's Kairakuen, Korakuen is ranked as one of Japan's three best landscape gardens. It is located just beside Okayama Castle, which can be seen from the garden as "borrowed scenery".

The local feudal lord ordered the construction of Korakuen in 1687 as a place of entertainment for the ruling family and a location for receiving important guests. Occasionally, the public was permitted to enter the garden.

■Getting There

Korakuen is about 1.5 km or a 25-30 mins walk east of Okayama Station. Trams on the Higashiyama Line can be taken to Shiroshita stop (5 minutes, 100 yen, frequent departures) from where the garden's south gate can be reached in a 10-15 minute walk. Alternatively, a bus runs between Okayama Station and Korakuen-mae bus stop (20 minutes, 140 yen, every 15-25 minutes), which is located just beside the garden's main gate.

Note that there are two entrances to Korakuen: a main gate beside the Prefectural Museum and a south gate near the bridge that crosses to Okayama Castle.

●Kurashiki Canal Area (Bikan Historical Quarter)

photo003_destination_kurashiki_top_.jpg

Kurashiki is located in Okayama Prefecture, not far from the prefectural capital of Okayama City. Kurashiki has a preserved canal area that dates back to the Edo Period (1603-1867), when the city served as an important rice distribution center. In fact, the name "Kurashiki" can be roughly translated as "town of storehouses", which refers to the storehouses in which the rice was kept.

Many of Kurashiki's former storehouses have been converted into museums, boutiques and cafes. The Ohara Museum is the most impressive of Kurashiki's museums, exhibiting a large collection of works by famous Western artists. The canal area is a ten minute walk from Kurashiki Station.

During the Edo Period (1603-1867), Kurashiki was an important point along the distribution route of Japan's most important commodity, rice. Large quantities of rice from the surrounding area were brought into Kurashiki and intermediately stored there in storehouses before being shipped to Osaka and Edo. Because of the city's importance in the rice trade, Kurashiki was put under direct control of the shogunate, and the city was even named after its many storehouses (kura).

Canals were built to allow boats and barges to navigate between the city's storehouses and the nearby port. A central section of the city's former canal system has been preserved in the Bikan Historical Quarter. The weeping willow trees that line the canal and the stone bridges that cross over the water make for a picturesque scene.

■Getting There

The canal area is a 10-15 minute walk from Kurashiki Station's south exit. A main road, Motomachi-dori, leads south from the station to the canal area, but walking through the parallel shopping arcade is more enjoyable and almost as fast.

Travelers, who would rather not walk from the station, can take a bus to the Ohara Bijutsukan bus stop (2 minutes, 170 yen), which is located just beside the Ohara Museum.

●Iwakuni Castle

photo002_iwakuni-castle_.jpg

Iwakuni Castle was built in 1608, at the beginning of the Edo Period. The site of the castle was chosen for its natural defensive advantages on top of Mount Shiroyama and half surrounded by a natural moat, the Nishiki River. The castle keep is four stories high, and looks out onto the city 200 meters below.

Probably a source of considerable frustration for those who built it, the original castle lasted only slightly longer than the time it took to construct it. Being built over the course of five years, the castle was torn down by decree of the shogun a mere seven years after its completion.

■Getting There

A ropeway provides access to Iwakuni Castle. The ropeway's lower station can be reached in a five minute walk from the Kintai-kyo Bridge, while the castle is another five minute walk from the ropeway's upper station.

Buses travel from both Iwakuni Station and Shin-Iwakuni Station to Kintai-kyo bus stop. The trip takes 20 minutes and costs 250 yen from Iwakuni Station (buses every 5-15 minutes), or 15 minutes and 290 yen from Shin-Iwakuni Station (2-3 buses per hour).

[Tottori]

Tottori City, the capital of Tottori Prefecture, is located in western Japan along the coast of the Sea of Japan. Tottori is most famous for its sand dunes, the largest in Japan, which cover over 30 square kilometers of coast to the north of the city center.

●Sand Dunes (Tottori Sakyu)

photo001_sand_dunes_.jpg

The Tottori Sand Dunes are the largest sand dunes in Japan and Tottori's most famous tourist attraction. Located just outside the city center, they span roughly 16 kilometers of coast along of the Sea of Japan and are up to two kilometers wide and 50 meters high. They are part of the Sanin Kaigan National Park.

The sand dunes were created over thousands of years, as sand from the nearby Sendaigawa River was washed out to sea and eventually redeposited along the coast by the ocean's currents. Today, the constant movement of the tides and the coastal winds continuously shape the sand dunes and provide an ever changing landscape.

■Getting There

By regular city bus:
From Tottori Station, take a bus bound for the Tottori Sakyu (鳥取砂丘) and get off at the last stop. The one way ride takes 20 minutes and costs 370 yen. There are hourly departures from bus stop #0 in front of Tottori Station.

By taxi:
The sand dunes are about a twenty minute, 2200 yen taxi ride from Tottori Station.

The temple is best known for its Japanese style landscape garden, which consists of a large pond surrounded by lawn and tall maple and pine trees. The pond includes small islands representing a crane and a turtle, symbols of longevity and health, which are commonly found in Japanese gardens. Visitors are served matcha tea and sweets as they view the garden from the temple building.

■Getting There

Take the red line of the 100 Yen Kururi Bus from Tottori Station and get off at bus stop number 11 from where it is a short walk to the temple. The bus ride takes about 10 minutes and costs 100 yen. Buses depart every 20 minutes. Alternatively, the temple is a 30 minute walk from the station.

●Matsue Castle

photo001_matsue-castle_.jpg

Matsue Castle is one of only about a dozen original castles in Japan, meaning that its castle tower has survived the wars, fires, earthquakes and anti-feudal activities of the post-feudal era (since 1868).

Matsuejo was completed in 1611 by the local lord Horio Yoshiharu. In 1638, the fief and castle were reassigned to a branch of the Matsudaira clan, relatives of the Tokugawa. The castle tower underwent major renovation works in the 1950s.

The Adachi Museum of Art (足立美術館, Adachi Bijutsukan) was founded by Adachi Zenko in 1980 as a way of combining his passions for Japanese art and garden design. He hoped that viewing the gardens and artwork together would expand peoples' appreciation and interest in Japanese art.

The Adachi Museum of Art is best known for its award winning garden. It has been named the best garden in Japan annually since 2003 by the "Journal of Japanese Gardening". The garden can be enjoyed at anytime of the year and shows a different character depending on the season. It can only be viewed from the museum building.

●Izumo Taisha (Izumo Grand Shrine)

photo003_izumo_grand_shrine_.jpg

Izumo Taisha is located in the city of Izumo in Shimane Prefecture, a one hour train ride west of Matsue. It is one of Japan's most important and oldest shrines. There are no records of exactly when Izumo Taisha was built, but it is often considered the oldest shrine in Japan, being already in existence in the early 700s as revealed by the nation's oldest chronicles.

Izumo used to be ruled by a powerful clan in pre-historic times, and the region plays a central role in Japan's creation mythology. The main deity (kami) enshrined at Izumo Taisha is Okuninushi no Okami. According to the creation myths, Okuninushi was the creator of the land of Japan and the ruler of Izumo. He also became known as the deity of good relationships and marriage. Visitors consequently clap their hands four times instead of the usual two times during their prayers: twice for themselves and twice for their actual or desired partners.

■Getting There

Izumo Taisha is located in the outskirts of Izumo City, about one hour west of Matsue. Izumo's main railway station is called Izumoshi Station.

From Izumoshi Station

From the railway station, Izumo Taisha can be reached by either train or bus.

By Ichibata Railways, the shrine can be reached in about 20 minutes and for 490 yen. A transfer of trains is required at Kawato Station. The shrine is a five minute walk from the terminal station, Izumo Taisha-mae Station.

Buses depart from bus stop number one in front of Izumoshi Station roughly every 30 minutes. The bus ride to the shrine takes about 25 minutes and costs 520 yen one way.

From Matsue

From Matsue, Izumo Taisha is most easily reached by Ichibata Railways:

Trains leave from Matsue Shinjiko Onsen Station and require about one hour to reach the shrine. One transfer of trains is required at Kawato Station. The one way fare is 810 yen. A one day pass for unlimited usage of Ichibata trains for 1500 yen comes slightly cheaper than two one way tickets.

An alternative route would be taking a JR train from Matsue to Izumoshi Station (25-40 minutes) and proceed to the shrine from there (see details above). This option is somewhat cheaper for Japan Rail Pass holders.

●Zentsuji-Temple

photo001_zentsu-ji_.jpg
Zentsuji Temple is the birthplace of one of the most revered figures of Japanese Buudahism, the high priest Kobo Daishi, or "Kukai". This is the Sohonzan ( the head temple of a Buddhist sect ) of the Shingonshu Zentsuji sect. Kobo Daishi built this temple himself when he returned from China. He began in 807, taking six years to complete it, and nemed the temple after his father, Lord Yoshimichi.

Together with Toji Temple in Kyoto and Mt. Koya in Wakayama, this temple is noted as one of the three holy sites linked to Kobo Daishi.

The temple grounds cover an area of about 45,000 square meters and are divided into the Eastern temple and Western temple. Many people from around the country have visited the site, known as the 75 th temple of Japan's famed pilgrimage of the 88 Sacred Temples of Shikoku, which traces the route on which the young Kobo Daishi was trained.

Over many centuries, Kompirasan had been revered as a mixture between Shinto shrine and Buddhist temple, until it was officially declared a shrine in the beginning of the Meiji Period during government efforts to separate the two religions. Nevertheless, the former symbiosis is still visible in Kompirasan's architecture which displays both Shinto and Buddhist elements.

■Getting There

Matsuyama Castle is one of Japan's twelve "original castles", i.e. castles which have survived the post-feudal era since 1868 intact. It is also one of the most complex and interesting castles in the country. It is located on Mount Katsuyama, a steep hill in the city center that provides visitors with a bird's eye view of Matsuyama and the Seto Inland Sea. There are about 200 cherry trees on the castle grounds, making this a lovely cherry blossom spot typically around late March to early April each year.

Matsuyama Castle was constructed between 1602 and 1628. In 1635, the castle got assigned to a branch of the Matsudaira family, relatives of the nation ruling Tokugawa, and it remained in their hands until the end of the feudal era. The current three storied castle tower was constructed in 1820 after the original five storied one had been destroyed by lightning.
